Gluckstein Lawyers is excited to welcome you to our fifth annual Risky Business Conference, taking place using a hybrid model, on October 18, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a networking event to follow.
The theme of this year's conference is "Starting and Finishing the Case: Common Pitfalls of Medical Malpractice Cases."
Our complimentary, comprehensive conference is dedicated to exploring the challenges and intricacies of medical malpractice litigation. This event brings together industry experts, and legal professionals, for insightful presentations on the common pitfalls encountered throughout the entire process of handling medical malpractice cases.
The primary objective of this conference is to delve deep into the complexities of medical malpractice cases, shedding light on the key issues faced by lawyers, plaintiffs, defendants, insurers, and healthcare professionals alike. Attendees will gain valuable insights and practical strategies to navigate through the various stages of a medical malpractice case, from inception to resolution. Our experts will share their key learnings, experiences, best practices and lessons learned on a number of topic areas such as junk science, client advocacy, trial successes, some litigation war stories, and how to manage what comes after a settlement, along with much more. GlucksteinView BioCharles is the owner and managing partner of Gluckstein Lawyers and has guided the firm to become the leaders in Personal Injury in Canada. He succeeded his father Bernard who founded the practice in 1962. He has been endorsed by his peers as a leading personal injury lawyer in both Best Lawyers in Canada and Lexpert directories. Richard is known across Canada for his expertise in birth injury cases. He has more than 30 years of experience representing seriously injured people.

LackmanView BioDavid graduated with Honours from Montreal’s McGill University in 1978. He next received his Juris Doctorate degree, cum laude, from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. In 1982 he was admitted by the Supreme Court of California to practice as an Attorney and Counsellor-at-Law in the courts of California. In 1985, David was admitted by the Law Society of Ontario as a Barrister, Solicitor and Notary Public.
His litigation practice now extends over 35 years, encompassing serious and complex personal injury and disability claims, and wrongful death claims. David has achieved outstanding results against some of the country’s largest corporations, including railways.

Duncan
EmburyDuncan is a Partner and Head of the Medical Malpractice group at Neinstein Personal Injury Lawyers. Duncan acts exclusively on behalf of plaintiffs on cases involving all areas of medical negligence including obstetrical negligence, surgical negligence, hospital and nursing errors, medication errors and errors in diagnosis. Duncan has extensive experience in litigating acquired brain injury cases from all causes including birth injuries, traumatic brain injury, anoxic brain injuries, ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes and brain abscess.
Duncan handles complex multi-jurisdictional cases to assist Ontario residents in recovering damages where the injuries occurred in a foreign jurisdiction. He was counsel at first instance on Van Breda v. Club Resorts, the leading Canadian case on jurisdiction.
In addition to a full trial and appeal practice in these areas, Duncan is also regularly asked to provide co-counsel assistance to other lawyers in handling complex medical negligence claims at both trial and appeal.

Sandra
MonardoSandra Monardo, Founder and Partner, Monardo Estate Law, is an Estate Lawyer and Mediator. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto in international relations and languages. Before going to law school, Sandra interned at the Canadian Embassy, in Rome, Italy. She completed her law degree at the University of Windsor and her articles as a clerk for the judges of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
Sandra brings almost 20 years of legal experience to resolving your estate-related issues. Since her call to the Ontario Bar in 2005, Sandra practised civil and commercial litigation exclusively for the first 12 years of her career and then focused on estate planning and estate litigation since, at her prior firm - a well regarded estate and trust boutique firm in Toronto where she became partner.
Sandra acts as estate trustee and estate trustee during litigation and is regularly sought out as mediator for estate disputes. Sandra is proud to be a first-generation Italian-Canadian. Growing up in Toronto’s Italian community and having visited, lived and worked in Italy, Sandra speaks Italian and understands and assists Italian-speaking clients.

MarinView BioJan’s practice focuses on professional negligence matters with a particular interest in medical malpractice and sexual assault litigation.
Jan is a current member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA). She is involved in their Interventions Committee, Litigator Editorial Board, Moot Organization Committee and the Practice Direction Committee. She is an active writer and contributor to the Litigator Magazine, OTLA Blog and Medical Malpractice Newsletter. She has acted as the chair of various OTLA sections, including the Medical Malpractice, New Lawyers and Women's sections.

GoloskyView BioJessica joined Gluckstein Lawyers as an articling student in 2017 and is a graduate of the J.D. program from the Faculty of Law at Western University. She graduated on the Dean’s Honour List and was awarded the Law Society of Ontario Prize for academic excellence.

LebeauJanet is involved in all aspects of a medical negligence matters, including organizing, collating and analyzing medical records; preparing chronologies; locating, retaining and briefing the appropriate expert; coordinating evidence; interviewing witnesses; and preparing documents such as statements of claim, pre-trial memorandums and mediation memorandums; as well as assisting at trial.View Bio -
Brenda
AgnewView BioBrenda is the proud mother of two boys, Chase and Maclain. Her son, Maclain, has severe Cerebral Palsy and profound hearing loss as a result of a condition known as Kernicterus, a brain injury that results from untreated jaundice. As a former Gluckstein client herself, Brenda acts as our Client Liaison to support and advise our clients and their families throughout their case.
She tirelessly advocates for better systems and programs for children and individuals with cerebral palsy and other childhood onset disabilities and is passionate about accessibility and inclusion. Brenda has been appointed to the Board of Directors for Easter Seals Ontario, is a school board trustee for the Halton Catholic District School Board and is an active member for volunteer organizations such as CP-Net, CHILD-BRIGHT Citizen Engagement Committee, and the Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee among others.
