The College of Optometrists (Ontario) v. SHS Optical Ltd. series of decisions concerned an optician who was dispensing eyewear without prescriptions. A fine of approximately $17,000,000 was imposed together with imprisonment of the optician for one year, and house arrest of the optician's spouse for six months. The Court of Appeal upheld both trial-level decisions and the Supreme Court denied leave.
