The Government of Ontario is increasing the penalty for operating an electronic handheld device while driving. Effective March 18, 2014 the penalty is nearly doubling from $155 to $280.

While this is a step in the right direction, we would like to see the government go even further. Demerit points at a minimum need to be part of the deterrence mix, and possibly even temporary licence suspension.

Distracted driving kills. Too many families have been ruined by a text message. Penalties proportional to the risks created are necessary to ensure the message gets through.
